Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
